Stewart and Stevenson Acquires Automotive Technik Holdings Limited Manufacturer of the Pinzgauer Light Tactical Vehicle.
Stewart and Stevenson Services Inc. announced today that it has acquired the outstanding shares of Automotive Technik Holdings Limited . ("ATL") , the United Kingdom-based manufacturer of the Pinzgauer light utility vehicle.
ATL began manufacturing the vehicle in the late 1990s in Guildford, England.
In addition to the standard 4x4 and a 6x6 configuration, ATL recently added a new Pinzgauer X-M (X-treme Mobility) model and an armored 6x6 variant.
ATL has won major contracts in competitive tenders from the UK Ministry of Defence and the New Zealand Ministry of Defence, and is involved in a number of additional programs worldwide.
The vehicle Steyr-Daimler-Puch Pinzgauer TD (Turbo Diesel) was originally developed in the late 1960s by Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Graz, Austria, and was named after the Pinzgauer, an Austrian breed of horse.
First generation (710 and 712) prototype was developed around 1969 and production began in 1971
In 1980, Steyr-Daimler-Puch started development on a second generation Pinzgauer (716 and 718) . The initial second generation Pinzgauer rolled off the assembly line at the end of 1984.
In 2000 the rights were sold to Automotive Technik Ltd (ATL) in the UK. ATL was subsequently acquired by Stewart & Stevenson Services.
Inc. in 2005; in May 2006, Stewart & Stevenson became a subsidiary of the aerospace and defence group Armor Holdings, Inc.
One year later, Armor Holdings was acquired by BAE Systems plc, who discontinued UK production of the Pinzgauer (in 2008), which was proving to be vulnerable to mines and improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan. Development work (done in the UK) on a planned Pinzgauer II was evaluated by a BAE subsidiary in Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa but no vehicle was ever made.
The Pinzgauer first-generation vehicle was manufactured in 710 4x4 and 712 6x6 models with the versatile platform allowing the vehicle to be adapted for any configuration. 710 4x4 body variants include M, T, K, AMB-Y and AMB-S. M is a troop transporter with soft top and T is a flat-bed carrier. The variant K is a four-door, hard-top station wagon, AMB-Y is a three-door ambulance, while AMB-S is another ambulance version with an air-portable removable shelter. 712 6x6 body type variants include M, T, FW, K, W, DK and AMB-S.
