In 1930 Guy introduced the 'Warrior' 4-wheeled chassis, powered by a Gardner diesel engine, and the 6-wheeled 'Goliath', a development of the 'Warrior'. Both had driven rear axles, and 8 speed gear boxes. The 'Goliath' could accommodate a 22 ft. long body, and carry a 12 ton load. The development of the all-important Guy military vehicles continued with the launch of 6-wheel and 8-wheel driven vehicles which could go almost anywhere, even across a 6 ft. wide trench, without falling into it.

The AEC Roadtrain was a prototype road train designed by the British Overseas Mechanical Transport Committee and built by Leyland Motors and Associated Equipment Company (AEC) in the early 1930s to meet a British Army requirement for an offroad capable heavy transport vehicle to open up remote areas of the British Empire. The AEC Roadtrain consisted of an eight-wheeled tractor unit and two eight wheeled trailers, the entire train was 71 ft 8 in (21.84 m) long. The tractor unit was an 8x8 vehicle powered by a 130 horsepower (97 kW) six-cylinder AEC diesel engine of 540 cubic inches (8.8 l) displacement, driven through a 4 speed manual transmission and 3 speed transfer case. All wheels had single tyres, the steering for the tractor unit was from the first and forth axles, with the vehicle pivoting on the centre two axles, traction was applied to all eight wheels through four differentials. The first prototype unit was constructed by Leyland Motors whilst the subsequent units were all built by AEC's wholly owned subsidiary company Hardy Motors.

The layout of the drive shafting Guy wheel system the view from the top Non-steering wheels Steering wheels
The front portion of a chassis according to Mr. Guy's patents. The layout of the drive shafting from the gearbox to the road wheels is clearly shown. For non-steering wheels the longitudinal shaft may ride with the frame (left) or with the axle (right), the right-angled drive being by bevel gear, whilst the final drive is effected by spur gears. For steering wheels the longitudinal shaft may ride with the frame or with the axle. Worm gearing is employed for the right-angled drive, the shaft passing through a hollow stub axle.
