Peugeot is a French cars brand, part of PSA Peugeot Citroen.
The family business that preceded the current Peugeot company was founded in 1810, and manufactured coffee mills and bicycles. On 20 November 1858, Emile Peugeot applied for the lion trademark. Armand Peugeot built the company's first car, an unreliable steam tricycle, in collaboration with Leon Serpollet in 1889; this was followed in 1890 by an internal combustion car with a Panhard-Daimler engine. Due to family discord, Armand Peugeot in 1896 founded the Societe des Automobiles Peugeot.
Armand Peugeot became interested in the automobile early on and, after meeting with Gottlieb Daimler and others, was convinced of its viability. The first Peugeot automobile, a three-wheeled, steam-powered car designed by Leon Serpollet, was produced in 1889; only four examples were made. Steam power was heavy and bulky and required lengthy warmup times. In 1890, after meeting Daimler and Emile Levassor, steam was abandoned in favour of a four-wheeled car with a petrol-fuelled internal combustion engine built by Panhard under Daimler licence. The car was more sophisticated than many of its contemporaries, with a three-point suspension and a sliding-gear transmission.

DELAHAYE JEEP STORY The second step came in 1947 when, despite the poor economic conditions and shortages, the French army announced an ambitious programme to replace its WW2 stock with a new generation of French designed and built vehicles. The range was to include a ¼ tonne 4x4, a larger ¾ tonne 4x4, a 1.5 tonne 6x6, a 3 tonne 6x6, a 6 tonne 6x6 and a 12 tonne 8x8 tractor unit. Delahaye took on the development of a new jeep while their long time rivals at Hotchkiss developed the larger ¾ tonne 4x4. Whilst Hotchkiss' prototype ¾ tonne 4x4 ended up remarkably like the Dodge it was replace, Delahaye’s jeep made a giant technological leap forward. Jeeps in France

In 1941 Francois Lehideux, then a leading member of the government’s economic team, called Jean-Pierre Peugeot and his General Director Maurice Jordan to a meeting, and invited them to study the possibility of taking a controlling share in the Hotchkiss business. The suggestion from Lehideux derived from a German law dated 18 October 1940 authorising the confiscation of businesses controlled by Jews. The Peugeot business itself had been operating, grudgingly, under overall German control since the summer of 1940. In any event, in July 1942 Peugeot took a controlling share in the Hotchkiss business and towards the end of 1942 the names of Peugeot and Jordan were listed as members of the Hotchkiss board. There is no evidence of any attempt to combine the operations of the two businesses, however: after the war Peugeot would in due course relinquish their holding in Hotchkiss. En 1950, Peugeot a propose une voiture dite agricole, la 203R, dont les organes venaient de la serie des voitures 203. La puissance semble avoir ete insuffisante et seuls quelques prototypes seront fabriques de 1950 a 1956.
