BAE Caiman The Caimanis an armored vehicle with a V-hull design based on the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) and Low Signature Armored Cab (LSAC), initially developed by Stewart & Stevenson. Stewart & Stevenson was later acquired in 2005 by Armor Holdings, which developed the Caiman from the FMTV and LSAC designs. Armor Holdings also owned O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt (which had exclusive rights to the up-armor kits the U.S. Military selected for their Humvees) and Integrated Textile Systems (who had an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber called Tensylon that is processed into composite armor) at the time.
The Caiman completed testing by the US Military at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in July 2007. On 13 July 2007, Armor Holdings received a prime contract award by the US Navy on the behalf of the US Marine Corps for $518.5 million under the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle program. The contract specified delivery of 1,154 Category I MRAP vehicles and 16 Category II MRAP vehicles by the end of February 2008.

FMTV's origins trace back to a U.S. Army TRAining and DOctrine Command (TRADOC) requirements document issued in 1983 for a Medium Tactical Truck (MTT), the intended replacement for the in-service 2.5-ton truck.
The FMTV is based on the Austrian Steyr 12 M 18 (4x4) truck, but substantially modified to meet U.S. Army requirements that included a minimum 50% US content
The requirements for what became the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) were worked out in the early 1980's and crystalized with a formal US Army tender in 1988. FMTV's object was to replace the US Army's ageing M35 trucks with a modern truck to last beyond the year 2000. Stewart & Stevenson and Steyr Daimler Puch were successful with trucks based on Steyr's 12 M 18 model.
Prototypes for what the US Army was describing as the ”Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles” (FMTV) were produced by three companies towards the end of the 1980s – the Tactical Truck Corporation (a consortium formed by General Motors and Bowen-McLaughlin-York), Teledyne Continental and Stewart & Stevenson. Following extensive trials, the Texas- based Stewart & Stevenson company received a five-year $1.2 billion contract to produce 10,343 trucks. Production started in 1991, and further contracts followed requesting a total Of 85,000 vehicles.
