History AWD , QUATTRO

The Audihistory begins with a man called August Horch , who founded the Company HORCH & CO in 1899.He invented his first car 1901 with the help of 15 fellow workers. In 1909 Mr. Horch had to leave his company due to major problems with the commercial management and founded another company called Audi. Audi is the Latin translation for "Horch" and he took that name because he wanted to build cars under his own name. So the brand "AUDI Automobilwerke GmbH" was registraded in 1910. Audi in its present form is the successor of the concern Auto Union, formed by the merger of four companies supplying cars and motorcycles under the brands DKW, Horch (supplier of vehicles to the German Wehrmacht, Type Horch 108 (1942) ), Audi and Wanderer. As a consequence of the transformation has been left only brand Audi. Soon after the war there were again many cars produced, the most important was the DKW Munga, a four-wheel jeep. This was the beginning of the later concept called Quattro. The Iltis jeepwhat had replaced the Munga. Mr.Bensinger, the father of the Quattro, made many tests and tried to convince the management to give him green light for building a four wheel drive concept in an street car. The board of directors were not very pleased with that idea because the thought that nobody will buy such an car and especially if it was a high technology one not build by Porsche or Mercedes. These two firms were the only ones that had the name to do such huge inventions. One has to notify that the Auto Union at that time had no reputation in build high tech cars. Fortunately Mr.Bensinger did a good job, the project QUATTRO was born and the management decided to make this drive train concept famous all over the world with high activities in motor sport. The name AUDI should become as worthfull as Porsche and Mercedes. Now Audi is a member of the Volkswagen Group and has its roots at Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany.

He in fact until 1962 that different European military experts put themselves around a table to try to design a command and liaison vehicle. The "Europa-Jeep" plan is launched through 3 big competitive working groups. Amongst them German Glas-MAN but found also Bussing-Lancia-Hotchkiss, NSU, Moto Guzzi, Panhard-Citroen as well as Fiat-Renault-Saviem.
Prior to the advent of the Type 181, the German military had purchased several thousand vehicles of the Munga, a light jeep manufactured by DKW, but production of the Munga had ended in 1968. Volkswagen had then consolidated the former Auto Union marques into a single company, re-using the Audi name to designate vehicles manufactured by the company rather than continuing to manufacture vehicles under the names of the various brands that had made up the original Auto Union.
The Audi image at this time was a conservative one , and so, a proposal from chassis engineer Jorg Bensinger the (father of the Quattro), was accepted to develop the four-wheel drive technology in Volkswagen's Iltis military vehicle for an Audi performance car and rally racing car. The performance car, introduced in 1980, was named the "Audi Quattro", a turbocharged coupe which was also the first German large-scale production vehicle to feature permanent all-wheel drive through a centre differential. Commonly referred to as the "Ur-Quattro" (the "Ur-" prefix is a German augmentative used, in this case, to mean "original" and is also applied to the first generation of Audi's S4 and S6 Sport Saloons, as in "UrS4" and "UrS6"), few of these vehicles were produced (all hand-built by a single team), but the model was a great success in rallying. Prominent wins proved the viability of all-wheel drive racecars, and the Audi name became associated with advances in automotive technology.
